Amersfoort is a city and municipality in the Randstad region of the Dutch province of Utrecht. The municipality was the second-largest in the province and the fifteenth-largest in the nation as of 1 December 2021 with 158,531 residents. Amersfoort is also one of the largest Dutch railway junctions with its three stations—Amersfoort Centraal, Schothorst and Vathorst—due to its location on two of the Netherlands' main east to west and north to south railway lines. The modern pentathlon events were held in the city at the 1928 Summer Olympics. 2009 recognised the city of Amersfoort's 750th birthday.
