Koin Pueblo

Pueblo (capitalised) refers to the Native Puebloan tribes that live in fixed-location communities with permanent structures, also known as pueblos, in the Southwest United States (lowercased). The Spanish explorers of northern New Spain used the term pueblo to refer to permanent indigenous towns they found in the region, mainly in New Mexico and parts of Arizona, in the former province of Nuevo México. The communities that lived in apartment buildings made of stone, adobe mud, and other native materials were still referred to by this word. The structures were often multi-story buildings circling an open plaza, with chambers only accessible by ladders raised and lowered by the residents to keep out intruders. Numerous hundreds to thousands of Puebloans lived in the larger pueblos. In pueblos of this type, several federally recognised tribes have historically dwelt. The later Pueblo Deco and contemporary Pueblo Revival architectural styles, which combine elements of traditional Pueblo and Hispano design, have maintained their popularity in New Mexico. Some historical locations, including Acoma Pueblo, now use the term as part of their official names.
