Koin Cairo

Egypt's capital, Cairo, is also the biggest city in the Arab world. With a population of 21.3 million, the Greater Cairo metropolitan area is the largest urban agglomeration in Africa, the largest in the Arab world, the largest in the Middle East, and the sixth largest in the world. Due to its geographic proximity to the ancient towns of Memphis and Heliopolis as well as the Giza pyramid complex, Cairo is often connected with ancient Egypt. The city, which is close to the Nile Delta, was originally called Fustat and was built next to the old Roman citadel of Babylon after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 640. In 969, a new city called al-Qhirah was established nearby by the Fatimid dynasty. As the primary urban centre during the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras, it later replaced Fustat. Given the predominance of Islamic architecture, Cairo is known as "the city of a thousand minarets" and has long served as a hub for the political and cultural life of the region. In 1979, the historic core of Cairo was designated as a World Heritage Site. According to GaWC, Cairo is rated as a World City with a "Beta Plus" classification.
