Koin August

In both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, August is the eighth month of the year and the fifth of seven that are 31 days long. Since March was the first month of the year in the ancient ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus in 753 BC, Leo's zodiac sign was originally known as Sextilis in Latin. When King Numa Pompilius added January and February to the year prior to March around 700 BC and gave it 29 days, it became the eighth month. When Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar in 46 BC, he added two days, giving it its present-day duration of 31 days. It was given a new name in honour of Emperor Augustus in 8 BC. He choose this month because it was the time of several of his great victories, notably the conquest of Egypt, according to a Senatus consultum that Macrobius cited. According to a myth that is frequently repeated, August has 31 days because Augustus wanted his month to be the same length as Julius Caesar's July. However, this myth was created by the scholar Johannes de Sacrobosco in the 13th century. It was not chosen for its duration; Sextilis really had 31 days before it was renamed.
