Recife, the capital and largest city of the state of Pernambuco in the northeastern part of South America, is the fourth-largest urban area in Brazil with 4,054,866 residents. It is also the largest urban area in the North/Northeast Regions. 1,653,461 people called the city proper home in 2020. Recife was established in 1537 as the primary harbour of the Captaincy of Pernambuco, which was well-known for its extensive production of sugar cane, during the early Portuguese colonisation of Brazil. It was Mauritsstad, the former capital of the Dutch West India Company's colony of New Holland in Dutch Brazil, which was founded in the 17th century. Before the Beberibe and Capibaribe rivers pour into the South Atlantic Ocean, the city is situated where they meet. On the Atlantic, it is a significant port. Its name makes reference to the stone reefs that line the city's coastline. Recife's landscape, which includes numerous rivers, little islands, and more than 50 bridges, has earned the nickname "Brazilian Venice" for the city. As of 2010, it is the capital city with the second-highest HDI in all of North and Northeast Brazil and the highest HDI in Northeast Brazil.
