Lashkargh, formerly known as Bost or Boost, is the administrative centre of Helmand Province in southwest Afghanistan. It is situated where the Arghandab River joins the Helmand River in the Lashkargah District. As of 2006, the city has 201,546 residents. Lashkargah is linked by major roads with Kandahar to the east, Zaranj on the border with Iran to the west, and Farah and Herat to the north-west. Most of it is quite dry and barren. However, there is farmland close to the Arghandab and Helmand rivers. Bost Airport is situated five miles north of the confluence of the Helmand and Arghandab rivers on the east bank of the Helmand River. It is the second largest city in terms of area in Afghanistan after Kabul and before Kandahar because of the trading centres.
