After Nairobi, the nation's capital, and Mombasa, a coastal city, Kisumu ranks third in terms of population, making it the biggest city in Kenya to the west of Nairobi. In the Lake Victoria Basin, it is the third-largest city. Kogelo, the community where Barack Obama Sr., the 44th president of the United States, was born, is not far from Kisumu. Kisumu is the cultural hub for the Luo-speaking population of East Africa. It is not just a significant political metropolis but also one of Kenya's top commercial and industrial hubs. The city's downtown and lower town are currently undertaking an urban renewal project that involves updating the lakefront, decongesting major thoroughfares, and making the streets pedestrian-friendly.
