The capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of New Mexico is Albuquerque, also known as ABQ. Both of its nicknames, The Duke City and Burque, stem to its foundation as La Villa de Alburquerque in 1706 by Nuevo México governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdés. The city was an outpost on El Camino Real connecting Mexico City to the northernmost territories of New Spain, and was given its name in honour of the Viceroy of New Spain, the 10th Duke of Alburquerque. With a population of 564,559 according to the 2020 census, Albuquerque is the 32nd most populated city in the country and the fourth-largest in the Southwest. It is the largest city in the Albuquerque metropolitan area, which has 916,528 people living there as of July 2020. Additionally, it is a component of the Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Las Vegas combined statistical area, which had 1,162,523 people living there as of January 2020. The city is situated in the Albuquerque Basin and is bordered to the east and west by the West Mesa and the Rio Grande, with a bosque running from north to south. The city serves as a centre for businesses in the media and technology sectors, as well as for historical sites, the University of New Mexico, the Gathering of Nations, the New Mexico State Fair, and a variety of restaurants serving New Mexican food.
